Drug delivery system

Drug delivery system is outlined as a technological formulation or a tool that permits the introduction of a drug molecule within the body by controlling the rate, extent and the location of drug release. The development of a novel chemical entity is a very expensive and time-consuming process, and therefore designing of new delivery systems of an already existing drug molecule can significantly enhance the drug safety, efficacy, improve patient compliance, etc.

Different parts of a needle:

plunger, barrel,plunger stopper

needle gauge: The gauge size of a needle indicates what the diameter of the lumen (opening) is. The higher the gauge, the smaller the diameter. For example, a 30 gauge needle has a narrower lumen than a 25 gauge needle.

Pre-filled syringe

Prefilled syringes are now used across a wide array of therapeutics sectors outside of the traditional domains of anticoagulants and vaccines. The use of prefilled syringes is expected to accelerate over the coming decades. For the pharmaceutical company, the advantages of prefilled syringes are minimizing drug waste; increasing product life span and enhancing level of market share are some of driving market demand. For healthcare workers, prefilled syringes are recognized as an efficient, reliable and convenient method for drug administration. Furthermore, the ease at which patient can self-administer many types of injectables drugs make prefilled syringes of healthcare treatment out of hospital and into home. So, in future emerging challenge in the pharmaceutical market for prefilled syringes will be there. This broad acceptance of prefilled syringes is not surprising because of the range of compelling benefits including simplicity, suitability for home use, reduction in wasted products, and greater dose precision. Prefilled are convenient and help ease the administration process. Patient does not have to worry about the transfer of a drug from a vial to a syringe and therefore do not have to worry about leaving a small percentage of dose behind.

Prefilled provide greater patient safety by reducing the potential for inadvertent needle sticks and exposure to toxic products that can occur while drawing medication from vials. Prefilled syringes, with their pre measures dosage, can reduce dosing errors and increase patient compliance. Prefilled syringes can virtually reduce the manufactures need to overfill unlike vials those are overfill by as much 20-30% to account for potential waste. This is particularly important where manufacturing and product costs are high and bulk manufacturing capacity is low. Overall, this compilation of paper is not covering energy aspects of the field of prefilled syringes, but aims to provide the reader with a better understanding of this dynamically growing field of parenteral application system.Prefilled Syringes assures delivery of particulate free solution and accommodate volumes that typically range from 0.25 to 5.0 ml. They are therefore best suited to products administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Three categories account for the bulk of PFS: anti-thrombotics, vaccines, and biotech drugs.

STAKED & LUER lock PRE-FILLED SYRINGES:

With pre-filled syringes, liquid drug formulations are commonly stored for a shelf-life of up to 3 years. Two main categories of syringes can be found; the Staked (or Pre-Attached) Needle Syringe in which the injection cannula is already pre-attached, and the Luer Cone/Luer Lock Syringes in which the user attaches a hypodermic needle at the time of injection. The Luer Lock type differs from the Luer Cone due to the presence of a groove on the neck for snap-fit components, such as Luer Lock Adapters. Each type of syringe also has various options for the proximal flange: the large and small round flange as well as the cut flange, which has the advantage of preventing the syringe from rolling during injection preparation.

An obvious but very important difference between the Staked and Luer lock Syringe is that the Luer Syringe requires the user to mount a needle prior to injection. This brings with it the freedom to choose the correct needle to deliver the drug to the appropriate depth for a specific patient and/or injection site. For example, a user will choose a longer needle for an IM Injection into an obese patient or for a gluteal injection, as compared to a shorter needle for a thinner patient or a deltoid injection. However, the needle-choice flexibility that a Luer lock Syringe provides brings with it some usability disadvantages and risk for error. The user must first choose the correct needle length and gauge and then properly attach the needle. These additional steps are inconvenient and take additional time, but more importantly, they leave the user prone to impactful error; the incorrect needle can lead to a misplaced deposit of the medication, while an improperly attached needle can lead to leaking and inaccurate dosing.

Glass type syringes:

Glass type syringes are used for vaccination, heparin, enoxaparin and etc. With recent advancements in pharmaceuticals, the syringe market has experienced significant changes. Traditional glass syringes have limitations that make them incapable of serving the entire market, allowing engineers to develop plastic syringes as an alternative. Our COP & COC glass replacement plastic syringes are the answer, with improved accuracy and performance advantages over traditional glass syringes.

Benefits of COP & COC plastic syringes over glass syringes:

  • Available in 100% Silicone Free!
  • 100% DMSO Compatible
  • Ideal for uses with: HA (hyaluronic acid), Botox, Embolics and more…
  • Lower cost options
  • Shatter resistance
  • Weight: 50% less than glass, thus reducing shipping costs
  • Very low protein and water absorption
  • Ability to design in ways impossible with glass
  • Chemical resistance is very good when compared to glass
  • Solvent bonded and ultrasonically welded
  • Options for EO, Gamma and Steam Autoclave sterilization
  • Tub Fill or ISO Luer Lock Configurations

COP Plastic Syringes

COP (Zeon cyclic olefin polymer) plastic syringes have similar properties to COC syringes, but are even less brittle and can be made into more varied size and complex shaped containers. COP syringes are increasingly popular in applications where high viscosity products require high strength and high transparency to ensure the product is thoroughly injected.

COC Plastic Syringes

COC (Topas cyclic olefin copolymer) plastic syringes for the pharmaceutical and medical industry. The unique processing methods can produce a high quality product that exceeds the accuracy and performance standards set by glass syringes. The superior moisture barrier delivered with COC medical syringes extends the shelf life of some pharmaceutical solutions by 3 years, a standard that can’t be met by other thermoplastics used in less challenging applications. With COC syringes, the drug remains pure because COC is biologically inert, with very low extractables.

Different types of needles:

Needle parts consist of:

needle adaptor, needle hub, needle bevel, needle shaft

Hypodermic Needles:

These are the most widely type of needles. With a cylindrical hollow in them, they are used with the syringe to inject substances into the body or extract fluids from it. Commonly used for taking the liquid samples, they are trusted to be very quick. These are one of the most important role-players in research and development since they significantly reduce the possible contamination in condition of inoculation of a sterile substrate.

Dialysis Fistula Needles:

These are a crucial link between the patient and the dialysis machine. This is why they need to meet the maximum requirements of utmost quality, safety and comfort from both sides the user and the patient. They need to have optimized flow-geometry, biocompatibility, and consistent high product quality.

Huber Needles:

These needles are used to access the ports which are implanted under the skin of these ill patients. This is done for the repeated access to the veins for withdrawing infusion of medicines, blood, nutrient fluids, blood products and the solution for imaging. Such type of needles need to be designed for penetrating the port without having cut or dislodge any silicone or silver cores from the ports to which they have been inserted.

Aesthetic needle:

Aesthetic needles are specially designed for toxin and dermal filler injections to offer a wide range of benefits, such as reduced pain and improved patient comfort.
